TAKING A BREAK BUT STILL WORKING!

While filming on the Hobbit takes a break it appears more of the regular cast are doing other work. We already know that Martin Freeman is away filming Sherlock and Sir Ian McKellan is doing theatre but sources tell us that Richard Armitage has also been filming for Strike Back in South Africa. SMAUG GETS A VOICE

You sometimes wonder whether Peter Jackson has hired the BBC casting department for roles in The Hobbit. The latest is Benedict Cumberbatch who will be joining Sherlock colleague Martin Freeman for two roles in The Hobbit. One is voicing the Necromancer (i.e. Sauron) and the other the dragon Smaug.- the latter is a "motion-capture" creature. Of course we also have Richard Armitage who has appeared in BBC's Spooks as well as North and South. Okay we won't list everyone otherwise we will be covering ground but UK readers will know who we mean. Luke Evans will now play the role of Bard. Also announced Barry Humphreys will be the Goblin King by motion capture and Evangeline Lilly will be new elf Tauriel.

Martin Freeman is Bilbo

Who will return to The Hobbit

HERE IS THE FIRST LOOK AT BILBO

Newly released photo from the set of The Hobbit features the first image of Martin Freeman as the hero Bilbo Baggins in his cottage at Bag End. In the background around a table are some of the dwarves who came to him along with Gandulf to help them defeat the dragon Smaug. We have been trying to identify who you can see in the picture beneath their hair! We'll take a chance and say the one closest to the "hole" is Thorin played by Richard Armitage.but we disagree with many saying the one in the grey beard is actually Gandulf played by Sir Ian McKellan. No doubt he was in the scene but he is supposed to Gandulf the grey with a darker beard - this would be him as Gandulf the white so we expect it to be another of the dwarves.

JACKSON TALKS ABOUT NEW BAG END

It may look the same as the original Bag End cottage of Bilbo Baggins from the Lord of the Rings but in fact director Peter Jackson has explained that they had to reconstruct a new one for these two films. The original has been moved on to their farm where guests can actually sleep in it. Whether that is for the paying public has not been made clear but we are assuming it is a guest house for their friends otherwise they may never get any peace from "guests". Left is another image of Jackson entering the new Hobbit set and you can see more on our first page - click here.
