The last remaining survivor of the Titanic disaster Milvina Dean died at the age of 97 Dean who was in a nursing home in Southampton had been struggling with costs for her care. Dean was just nine months old when the Titanic went down. Her father saved his wife and two children only to die himself when the ship sank. After a fund was started in Belfast where the ship was launched the fundraisers asked Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet as well as James Cameron for help. They all gave funds totally $30,000 to help with care costs for Dean.
The final of Britain's Got Talent didn't go quite the way many had predicted with Susan Boyle the 48 year old singer from West Lothian, Scotland coming second to dance group Diversity. However everyone in her home town said that they consider her a winner. In the last week the pressure of her worldwide fame has been reported with angry outbursts at press who have dogged her every move. She even wanted to quit the show but judge Piers Morgan persuaded her to come back. Judge Simon Cowell praised Susan's courage on the show. Boyle san I Dream a Dream from Les Miserables, the song she auditioned with. She hopes to bring out an album. Diversity is a street dance group made up of several groups of brothers and 4 friends.
The British had a slow night at the Prime Time Emmy's this year as the nominations palled comared to other years but the BBC did pick up three Emmy's for its series Little Dorrit. Classified as a mini series in the US on Masterpiece Theatre it was transmitted on the Beed in half hour soap-style parts. As well as best Mini Series it also won for design and cinematography.
In International Emmy news, ITV News won for the China Earthquake coverage and Channel 4 won for the African Witch Children documentary. Just like the US Emmy awards the International Emmy categories are split and given out at different times of the year.
Lovers of the Wii by Nintendo will have heard that they are reducing their prices in time for the festive season. Wait until they here that the UK may not be benefiting from the price cut. It is apparently only happening in Japan and US at the moment. Hopefully it will slowly come over the Atlantic before there is a backlash!
Prince Charles has knighted Hammer Horror star Christopher Lee (87). He is best known to a generation as Dracula and to a more recent one for his roles in Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Sir Christopher is pleased that he has spanned the generations and his career is still going strong. He was awarded a knighthood for his contribution to acting and to charity.
Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen has died suddenly. She was best know as Sarah Jane Smith in the Doctor Who series. She also appeared in the sister-series The Sarah Jane Adventures. Please click here for more.....
The King's Speech continues to gain momentum in the run up to the Oscars with Colin Firth gaining his second BAFTA for best actor in a row (the only other actor to do that was way back in the 60s with Rod Steiger). Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush won the best supporting awards. Natalie Portman won best actress for Black Swan but the best director award went to The Social Network. Will the Oscars follow this pattern? Just two weeks to find out.
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish have had a son Zachary by surrogate in California. John has said he will not divulge information about the mother but that the baby was born on Christmas Day. Previously the couple tried to adopt a boy from Kiev but were rejected on the grounds that Elton John at 63 was too old. Given the strict British laws on surrogacy it was felt easier to go abroad. The baby weighed in at 7lbs.
The Hobbit cast has been announced with a fair share of British actors filling the roles sparking rumors that the production will indeed move to the UK. Peter Jackson's partner Fran Walsh said Warner Bros were considering the now vacant factory where Harry Potter was filmed. One cast member from the original LOTR who may not be involved newly knighted Sir Christopher Lee. He has said that filming in New Zealand along with the very long flight is not something he could so at his age but the producers may still find a way of having him in the film to show Saruman's fall into Sauron's influence. There has been a lot of specualtion about how the two Hobbit films will differ from the book which unlike LOTR was very much a children's story at the beginning only connecting with the Lord of the Rings in later editions. It is thought that a lot of what isn't there but only referred to briefly may be elaborated on to make more of a connection with LOTR. To find out more about the cast - click here
George Michael has done it again. The singer has been caught driving dangerously in London. Police suspect he was under the influence. This is similar to an incident in 2007 where he had his license suspended for two years. This time as previous he smashed his car. This time it was an object not parked cars but the result may be the same. Last time he left the scene which is why it caused more problems but this time he remained with his car it is believed.
For those of you not aware Prince William married Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April and here is the official wedding picture of the couple with their bridesmaids and pages. In Britain it was viewed by 24m people according to early viewing figures and police estimate there were at least 1m people lining the route from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace on the day. There were 1,900 guests and a party in the evening for 300 close friends hosted by Prince Charles. The Queen had already left for Windsor after the post wedding reception. The Middleton family stayed at the exclusive Goring Hotel close to the Palace and there was also a party held at the hotel. The royal couple have asked the media to not intrude on their honeymoon plans. They are staying in the UK for the weekend as Prince William returns to his duties next week. He is an air rescue pilot. The couple will go abroad for their honeymoon which is also being kept secret. The press has agreed to leave the couple alone. The dress was lauded, designed by Sarah Burton for the house of Alexander McQueen.
One of the famous faces of the Sixties pop scene in London, John Walker (born John Maus) has died after a battle with liver cancer. He was 67. He founded the The Walker Brothers with fellow musicians Scott Engel and Gary Leeds. They all took on the Walker name although there were not brothers. Engel famously left the group while at the height of their fame. They reformed in the late 70s and recorded further albums together before disbanding once again. They all continued with their solo careers.
