THE LATEST RATINGS New shows are achieving respectable but not hoped for ratings against their costs. Spielberg's Terra Nova has not achieved the ratings highs that a show costing approximately $4m an episode requires. Sara Michele Geller's return in Ringer is also average in the ratings race but doing well for the CW. It is not in the Terra Nova league in terms of cost but given star salaries these days it won't be cheap. The well established shows such as NCIS are again winning the ratings war over the new shows. In its second season Hawaii Five O manages a respectable win of its time slot on opening for CBS. We already have a cancellation to list from the new shows. The Playboy Club has been cancelled after just three episodes. It was a "retro" show hoping to fill the gap left by Mad Men but just didn't get the ratings. Pan Am also a "retro" show had a big splash at the recent MIPCOM TV market in Cannes and looks to be better placed to survive with star Christina Ricci. However, time will tell with all the new shows. There are never any guarantees. |

HAWAII FIVE O WINS PEOPLE'S CHOICE
From a sunny beach in Oahu the cast of Hawaii Five O thanked the fans for voting them the best new show of the 2010 season at the People's Choice Awards. Of course the clip was pre-recorded and the tweets went out pretty soon after Pauley Perrette at the show announced the winner.
NEWS ON THE 2010 FALL SEASON
Are you afraid your favourite series is not coming back? Well be afriad, be very afraid. With so much diversity audience numbers are dwindling for current series and new ones don't always catch on. News of some early cancellations are below. If you haven't kept up with all the older series that are not coming back even in mid-season then check returning series for more information. Go to On the box for the updated thoughts on this season's shows likely to be cancelled.
Syfy has announced a new spin-off in the "Battlestar Gallatica" franchise. So it was inevitable that the channel would eventually announce the cancellation of "Caprica". Unlike the latest "Stargate" series, Syfy is not letting this show continue. Possible deal that the reworking by the producers into a new spin-off was at the cost of "Caprica". Anyway the new series will be entitled "Blood and Chrome". The current series will be suspended until the new year when those episodes already shot will air. No date on the new series going to air but it is likely that a pilot may air on the back of the remaining episodes of "Caprica".
CBS brings back Hawaii Five O this year. Premiere on September 20th with a new version of the familiar theme tune and Alex O'Loughlin in the role of Steve McGarrett originally played by Jack Lord for 12 seasons. This is one that will be a keeper as it has done well in the ratings winning its time slot on Mondays and another CBS newbie is Blue Bloods with Tom Selleck also winning its time slot. There has to be losers and Lone Star was the first cancelled and now Outlaw which competed against Blue Bloods on Fridays is also suspended - it will move to another day and time as 8 epidoes have currently been filmed.
Dan O is played by Steve Caan and Chin Ho is played by Daniel Dae Kim who is already very familiae with Hawaii from 4 seasons of Lost. Also on the team is Grace Park from Battlestar Gallatica. O'Loughlin is of course coming off two series that did not last that long - Moonlight where fans tried desperately to keep it going but obviously not enough watched to warrant it being saved and Three Rivers medical drama. In this case he may have a better bet with the mixture of action and the wonderful scenery plus lots of bikini shots. It always was a good mixture so let's hope they manage to get the mix right. Only time will tell. However Fox's Lone Star which we haven't even bothered to announce although it has been critically acclaimed may go the way of - well suffice to say it didn't pull in the audience.
On the list for advertisers at the LA Screenings is the US version of popular drama series Prime Suspect made in the UK and starring Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennyson. Created by Lynda La Plante the series will be part of the new line-up from NBC and is a co-production with ITV America. The US version stars Maria Bello as a New York as the Mirren character. Also new this season is an adaptation of the film The Firm which sees Mitch McDeere (played in the film by Tom Cruise) 10 years on after he has been put into the witness protection program after bringing down the law firm he was employed by in the original film. Adapted from the John Grisham novel the author also acts as an Executive Producer on the series. This is another in NBC's line up for the 2011/2012 season. They are also planning an adaptation of a Uk Channel Four comedy series, Free Agents which will have its original star Anthony Head follow it to the US version.
